    Boiler Quality Plate Sizes

Stock plates are held in 1250 mm and 1500 mm widths and 5000 mm and 6300 mm lengths. Cut-to-size and cut-to-length are available from these sizes.

Send sizes in millimetres and tell us the quantity you need. This helps us separate ready-stock items from material that must be sourced on an order basis.

    Thin Plate Sizes and Tolerances

ASTM A20/A20M and ASME SA-20/SA-20M are the general requirements standards for pressure vessel plate. For plates wider than 1200 mm, their commonly available size table starts at 4.6 mm thickness. Both of our stock widths, 1250 mm and 1500 mm, are wider than 1200 mm, and our stock starts at 3 mm, so our thinnest plates fall below the thickness listed in A20.

This does not rule the material out. The same standard states that permitted variations for other sizes are subject to agreement between the purchaser and the manufacturer or processor. In practice, the tolerance on our thinnest plate is agreed when the order is placed rather than taken from the published tables. Please include your required tolerance in the enquiry.

    Boiler Plate Steel Grades

We supply boiler plate steel grade ASTM A516 Gr. 70 for moderate and lower-temperature vessels. Other grades used for boiler steel plate include A515 Gr. 60/65/70 for intermediate and higher-temperature service, A537 Cl. 1 heat-treated plate, and Indian grades under IS 2002 and IS 2041.

    ASTM / ASME Grades

ASTM A516 / ASME SA-516 Gr. 55, 60, 65, 70. Carbon steel plate for moderate and lower-temperature pressure-vessel service. The steel is killed and made to fine austenitic grain size practice. We supply Grade 70 plates dual certified to ASTM A516 / ASME SA-516.

ASTM A515 / ASME SA-515 Gr. 60, 65, 70. Carbon-silicon plate for intermediate and higher-temperature boiler and pressure-vessel duty. The steel is killed and made to coarse austenitic grain size practice.

ASTM A537 / ASME SA-537 Class 1. Heat-treated (normalized) carbon-manganese-silicon plate for fusion-welded pressure vessels and structures. Classes 2 and 3 are quenched and tempered.

ASTM A285 / ASME SA-285 Gr. C. Carbon steel plate for low and intermediate tensile-strength pressure-vessel duty.

ASTM A387 / ASME SA-387. Chromium-molybdenum alloy steel plate for pressure vessels, used where the design temperature and creep requirements are beyond what plain carbon grades can handle.

    Indian Standard (IS) Grades

IS 2002 Gr. 1, Gr. 2, Gr. 3. Plain carbon steel plate for pressure vessels in intermediate and high-temperature service, including boilers. Grade 1 is low tensile, Grade 2 medium tensile and Grade 3 high tensile.

IS 2041 R220, R260, R275, R355, H235, H265, H295, H355. IS 2041:2009 covers plates for fusion-welded pressure vessels for moderate and low temperature service, with room temperature and elevated temperature properties. The R grades are room-temperature quality and the H grades are elevated-temperature quality, each graded by yield-strength level in MPa.

European (EN 10028-2) and DIN Grades

European pressure-purpose grades include EN 10028-2 P235GH, P265GH, P295GH and P355GH, which are the non-alloy grades in that standard. DIN 17155 HI, HII, 17Mn4 and 19Mn6 may appear on legacy drawings; check current requirements against EN 10028-2.

Which Boiler Quality Plate Grade to Specify

Grade selection starts with design temperature, pressure, toughness, heat treatment and governing code. Use this guide to frame the enquiry; final selection rests with the qualified design authority.

    Service dutyTypical familyEnquiry checkpoint
Moderate or lower-temperature pressure-vessel serviceASTM A516 / ASME SA-516Specify grade, thickness, impact requirement and certification
Intermediate or higher-temperature boiler serviceASTM A515 / ASME SA-515Confirm design temperature and heat-treatment condition

    Boiler Quality Plate Delivery Conditions

Boiler grade plate is supplied as rolled, normalized, normalizing rolled, or quenched and tempered, depending on the specification, and can be produced with vacuum-degassed steelmaking practice. State the required condition on the purchase order because it affects properties, inspection and price.

    • As-rolled plate where additional heat treatment is not specified. Under ASTM A516 / ASME SA-516, plates 40 mm and under in thickness are normally supplied as rolled, and plates over 40 mm are normalized.
    • Normalized or stress-relieved plate where specified. ASTM A516 / ASME SA-516 allows plates 40 mm THK and under to be ordered normalized or stress relieved, or both. Where notch-toughness tests are required on plates 40 mm THK and under, those plates are normalized unless the purchaser specifies otherwise, so state any impact requirement at enquiry.
    • Normalizing-rolled plate, where the rolling schedule produces a structure similar to that obtained by a separate normalizing treatment. IS 2002:2009 and IS 2041:2009 both define normalizing rolling and both permit it in place of normalizing, subject to agreement between purchaser and manufacturer. ASTM A516 does not list it as a delivery condition.
    • Quenched and tempered (Q&T) plate for specified heat-treated strength and toughness, for example ASTM A537 Class 2 and Class 3. Q&T is not listed as an ASTM A516 delivery condition, although A516 does permit cooling rates faster than still air followed by tempering where the purchaser approves it, in the range 595 to 705 °C (1100 to 1300 °F).
    • Vacuum-treated steel, ordered as supplementary requirement S1 of ASTM A20 / ASME SA-20, or S17 for vacuum carbon-deoxidized steel. Both are listed as suitable for ASTM A516 / ASME SA-516. Tighter chemistry is separate: S19, Restricted Chemical Requirements, allows restricted heat and product analysis limits to be specified in the purchase order, and S26 covers low-sulphur steel at 0.010 percent sulphur maximum, but neither is listed as suitable for A516, so they apply only by agreement with the manufacturer. State any restricted-chemistry requirement at enquiry.

Welding qualification, preheat, consumables, post-weld heat treatment and inspection must follow the material specification and the fabrication code.

Boiler Quality Plate — Frequently Asked Questions

What is a boiler quality plate?

Boiler quality plate is steel plate made for welded boilers and pressure vessels, where strength and notch toughness matter. Notch toughness is the plate’s ability to resist sudden brittle fracture when a notch, weld defect or sharp change of section is present. It is usually verified by Charpy V-notch impact testing.

What is the full form of BQ plate?

The full form of BQ plate is Boiler Quality plate.

Can boiler quality plates be cut to size?

Yes. We supply cut-to-length and cut-to-size plate. Cut faces are supplied as sheared or gas-cut edges. Uncut faces keep the edge the plate was supplied with, which is a mill edge or a universal mill (rolled) edge. Send your cut sizes and required edge condition and we will confirm.

What is the Indian standard for boiler quality plate?

    Common Indian designations include IS 2002 Gr. 1, 2 and 3, and IS 2041 R220, R260, R275, R355, H235, H265, H295 and H355. The project specification determines the correct grade.

Which boiler quality plate specification do you supply?

    We supply dual-certified ASTM A516 / ASME SA-516 Grade 70.

Do you supply boiler quality plates in Mumbai and other Indian cities?

Yes. Subject to order confirmation, we supply across India, including Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Coimbatore, Visakhapatnam, Indore, Bhopal, Ahmedabad and Surat.
