A516 Grade 70 is a pressure vessel quality (PVQ) carbon steel plate. Pressure vessel quality means the plate is made and tested to the stricter rules that apply to code vessels, rather than to general structural steel.
Ready stock runs 3 mm to 20 mm thick. Widths are 1250 mm and 1500 mm. Lengths are 5000 mm and 6300 mm. Thicknesses up to 100 mm come on order.
Where the heat is dual certified, the mill certificate carries both the ASTM A516 Grade 70 and the ASME SA-516 Grade 70 designations. A heat is one batch of molten steel. One dual certified heat can be supplied against an ASTM purchase specification and used on an ASME Section VIII vessel drawing, without needing a separate heat certified to the other specification.
Stock plate leaves our yard as-rolled. We hold HIC tested heats, and fresh HIC testing to NACE TM0284 comes on order. We cut plate to size. Every consignment ships with the mill test certificate to EN 10204:2004 Type 3.1. Dispatch runs 2 to 3 working days, with delivery across India.

What is ASTM A516 Grade 70 Plate?
ASTM A516 Grade 70 is a carbon-manganese steel plate made for welded pressure vessels working at moderate and lower temperatures. It is a pressure vessel quality plate, which means it is made and tested to stricter rules than general structural steel.
Tensile strength is 485 to 620 MPa. Minimum yield strength is 260 MPa. The steel is killed and made to fine austenitic grain size practice, which supports its toughness in cold service.
SA 516 Gr 70 is the same steel under its ASME designation.
Key Properties of ASME SA-516 Grade 70 Plate
Three properties decide where the grade lands on a drawing.
Notch Toughness
The steel is killed and made to fine austenitic grain practice, which is what gives it toughness at lower temperatures. Charpy V-notch testing is optional and comes from the purchase order. The design code or the project specification normally sets the test temperature and the acceptance values.
When an order calls for impact testing without naming a temperature or acceptance values, ASTM A20/A20M supplies them. A516 Grade 70 is a Class IV steel: 20 J average across three specimens, 16 J minimum for any single specimen, at −46 °C for plate 25 mm and under on longitudinal tests. These apply to normalized plate.
Weldability
Formability
The grade cold forms into shell courses and dished heads. Forming limits depend on thickness, bend radius, rolling direction, delivery condition and the qualified forming procedure.
ASTM A516 and ASME SA-516 Dual Certification
ASME BPVC Section II Part A adopts ASTM A516 for code use under the designation SA-516/SA-516M. The chemistry and the mechanical requirements are the same.
Where the heat is dual certified, the mill test certificate supplied with the plate carries both designations. Dual certification is accepted only where the heat and the certificate meet the requirements of both specifications.
UNS K02700 and the Metric Designation A516M Grade 485
UNS K02700 is the Unified Numbering System code for this chemistry. It appears on North American certificates and in ERP material masters. An enquiry for UNS K02700 plate and one for SA 516 Gr 70 plate ask for the same chemistry.
UNS covers chemistry only. It carries no mechanical requirements and no A20/A20M quality basis, so an order must still cite A516/A516M or SA-516/SA-516M.
A516M Grade 485 is the metric designation of the same grade. The 485 is the minimum tensile strength in MPa. The 70 in Grade 70 states the same requirement in ksi. The two figures are rounded values in different unit systems, not exact conversions. A516/A516M is one standard that carries both unit systems side by side, and the M marks the SI designations inside it. Use one unit system on an order, not both.

A516 states the grade requirements. A20/A20M states the general rules those grade requirements sit on: fine austenitic grain size, tension test orientation, thickness and flatness tolerance, elongation adjustment for thin plate, and the rules for retests. A purchase order that cites A516 alone buys A20/A20M with it.
ASTM A516 Gr 70 Chemical Composition
A516 Gr 70 is a carbon-manganese steel. At 12.5 mm and under, carbon is 0.27 percent maximum. Manganese is 0.85 to 1.20 percent on heat analysis. Silicon is 0.15 to 0.40 percent on heat analysis. Phosphorus and sulfur are both 0.025 percent maximum.
Heat analysis is the test taken from the molten batch. Product analysis is a later check taken from the finished plate, and it allows a slightly wider band on some elements.

The carbon, phosphorus and sulfur limits apply to heat analysis and product analysis alike. Only manganese and silicon carry a wider band on product analysis.
One rule changes how that table reads on a mill test certificate. For every 0.01 percentage point of carbon below the specified maximum, manganese may rise by 0.06 percentage points. The manganese ceiling is 1.50 percent on heat analysis and 1.60 percent on product analysis. So a certificate showing 1.35 percent manganese is compliant if the carbon came down far enough to match.
The carbon maximum also rises with the grade. At 12.5 mm and under it runs from 0.18 percent for Grade 55 to 0.27 percent for Grade 70, as the tensile band steps up.
Manganese limits change with thickness and grade together. Above 12.5 mm, Grades 60, 65 and 70 all run 0.85 to 1.20 percent on heat analysis, and only Grade 55 drops to 0.60 to 1.20. At 12.5 mm and under, Grades 55 and 60 run 0.60 to 0.90, though the standard also permits Grade 60 in that band at 0.85 to 1.20. Silicon is 0.15 to 0.40 for all four grades. The full ASTM A516 Grade 70 chemical composition records the carbon maximum and the manganese and silicon ranges for Grades 55, 60, 65 and 70.
The choice between A516 Grade 60, Grade 65 and Grade 70 sets chemistry against strength on a fabrication drawing. The lighter grades carry a lower carbon maximum and a lower allowable stress, so the same duty needs a thicker section.
Carbon Content by Plate Thickness
The carbon maximum climbs with section thickness, from 0.27 percent at 12.5 mm and under to 0.31 percent above 100 mm. Heavier plate gets less rolling reduction and cools more slowly, so a slightly richer carbon level is allowed to hold the tensile band through the full cross section.

A higher permitted carbon maximum feeds into a higher carbon equivalent. Carbon equivalent, section thickness and restraint together set preheat.
A 10 mm plate from stock and a 90 mm plate on order share a grade name but behave differently under the arc. A welding procedure written for the thin plate will not always suit the heavy plate. Preheat and consumable choice for welding A516 Grade 70 follow the carbon equivalent, thickness and restraint of the actual plate, not the grade designation on the order.
ASTM A516 Grade 70 Mechanical Properties
Plate A516 Gr 70 delivers 485 to 620 MPa tensile strength and a minimum yield strength of 260 MPa. Minimum elongation is 21 percent in 50 mm and 17 percent in 200 mm.

A certificate reports whichever elongation value matches the test specimen the mill used. The 21 percent figure is the base requirement. ASTM A20/A20M reduces it for plate under 8 mm, so a 3 mm or 4 mm certificate reads 16 percent, a 5 mm certificate 16.5 percent and a 6 mm certificate 18 percent.
A vessel designer does not size a shell on yield strength. SA 516 Gr 70 allowable stress is published in ASME BPVC Section II Part D, and that is the number the calculation uses: 20.0 ksi, or 138 MPa, at moderate temperatures under Section VIII Division 1.
This value holds steady through the low and moderate range and drops as design temperature rises. The 260 MPa yield strength is a minimum the plate has to meet on test, not the number used in the calculation.
SA 516 Gr 70 Hardness Values
ASTM A516 sets no hardness requirement, so hardness is not certified on the mill test certificate.
Most plate tests between 150 and 180 HBW in practice. The specified tensile range of 485 to 620 MPa corresponds to roughly 147 to 190 HBW on the ASTM A370 hardness conversion tables. These are indicative figures, not certified values.
Where a job carries a hardness limit, that limit comes from the project specification or from the sour service standard the order cites. SA 516 Gr 70 hardness values cover the scale conversions and the limits that apply.
SA 516 Gr 70 Temperature Range
There is no single temperature number at either end of the range.
The cold end is set by the minimum design metal temperature rules of the design code, and by the Charpy test temperature where an order calls for impact testing.
The hot end is set by the allowable stress table in ASME BPVC Section II Part D. That table runs to 538 deg C for Section VIII Division 1 and stops lower for other construction codes, so a drum built to Section I does not carry the Section VIII Division 1 figure. A graphitization caution applies above about 427 deg C. Graphitization is a slow change in the steel after long exposure to heat, which can reduce toughness. The full SA 516 Gr 70 temperature range depends on the construction code the vessel is built to.
ASTM A516 Gr 70 Physical Properties
ASTM A516 does not specify physical properties. The standard controls chemistry and mechanical performance only. The values below are typical published figures for this carbon steel, and they serve weight, thermal expansion and heat transfer calculations.

Published figures for these properties differ between sources, so treat them as typical values rather than fixed ones. None of them is certified on a mill test certificate.
Density matters most in procurement. Every plate weight on this page follows from 7.85 g/cm³, the same figure ASTM A20/A20M uses for theoretical mass.
Thermal expansion applies to jacketed vessels and to shells under cyclic duty, where differential growth between courses has to be allowed for. Conductivity and specific heat feed heat exchanger sizing.

We supply plate to the tolerances in ASTM A20/A20M, which cover thickness, width, length, flatness and camber.
A20/A20M describes plate by the sizes in which it is commonly available: 6.0 mm and over at widths above 200 mm, and 4.6 mm and over at widths above 1200 mm. A plate qualifies to a product specification by passing the tests that specification requires.

ASTM A516 Grade 70 Equivalent Grades and Designations
The closest cross-references for ASTM A516 Grade 70 are EN 10028-2 P355GH (1.0473), JIS G3118 SGV480, GB/T 713.2 Q345R and BS 1501-224 Grade 490. These are near equivalents. Confirm the exact requirement against the governing specification before any substitution.

Indian Standards Equivalent to ASTM A516 Grade 70
No Indian Standard is an exact 1:1 match for ASTM A516 Grade 70.
The closest BIS grade in practice is IS 2041 Grade R260. IS 2041 covers steel plates for pressure vessels used at moderate and low temperature. The steel is of killed quality and made to fine austenitic grain size practice, the same basis as A516. R260 has a minimum yield stress of 260 MPa, the same figure as A516 Grade 70, and its tensile band overlaps 485 to 620 MPa. Charpy impact testing is available on R260 by agreement at the time of ordering.
IS 2041:2024 has ten grades. R205, R220, R240, R260, R275 and R355 are room temperature quality. H235, H265, H295 and H355 are elevated temperature quality.
IS 2002 covers intermediate and high temperature service including boilers, so it sits closer to ASTM A515 than to A516. IS 2062 is structural steel and carries no pressure vessel quality basis.

Welding, Machining and Forming A516 Gr 70 Plate
A516 70 plate welds with SMAW, GMAW, FCAW and SAW on standard carbon steel consumables. Fine grain practice and lean carbon-manganese chemistry help the heat affected zone retain toughness, though heat input and cooling rate still govern the result.
ASME Section IX lists the grade as P-No. 1, Group No. 2. A procedure qualified on it carries across other P-No. 1 carbon steels, within the essential variables of ASME Section IX. Where the construction code requires notch toughness testing, the Group Number becomes a supplementary essential variable, so check Section IX before assuming the procedure transfers.

Minimum bend radius, springback allowance and machining feeds for A516 Grade 70 change with plate thickness and with rolling direction. A blank cut across the rolling direction rolls differently from one cut along it.
ASTM A516 Grade 70 Plate Supply Conditions
A516 Grade 70 plate at 40 mm and under normally ships as-rolled. ASTM A516 requires normalizing above 40 mm. At 40 mm and under, the standard also requires normalizing when the order calls for notch toughness testing, unless the purchaser specifies otherwise. HIC tested plate to NACE TM0284 comes on request.

ASTM A516 also permits stress relieving at 40 mm and under (clause 5.1). Where the purchaser approves, it permits cooling faster than still air, followed by tempering at 595 deg C to 705 deg C, to improve toughness (clause 5.4). Neither forms part of our standard supply.
As-rolled A516 Gr 70 Plate
As-rolled covers our full 3 mm to 20 mm ready stock. The standard treats as-rolled as normal supply at 40 mm and under.
ASTM A516 still allows plate in this band to be ordered normalized or stress relieved, or both. Read the delivery condition from the mill test certificate rather than assuming it.
Normalized A516 Gr 70N Plate
The N suffix is trade shorthand for a heat treatment, not a different chemistry. There is no Grade 70N in ASTM.
Normalizing A516 Grade 70 reheats the plate above the transformation range and then air cools it, which refines the grain. Where an order calls for normalizing, the mill test certificate records the delivery condition and the plate carries the mark MT, the ASTM A20/A20M mark for material treated, applied by whoever performed the heat treatment. Plate that is required to be heat treated but has not yet been treated carries the mark G, denoting green.
The thickness band and the toughness requirement decide whether an order carries that cost.
Impact Testing and Low Temperature A516 Gr 70 Plate
SA 516 Gr 70 impact requirements come from the order, not from the grade name. Where an order calls for Charpy V-notch testing, the plate is qualified at the test temperature written on that order, and the absorbed energy is reported under ASTM A20/A20M. The design code fixes the vessel’s minimum design metal temperature, and the plate has to be tested at or below it.
At 40 mm and under, ASTM A516 requires the plate to be normalized when notch toughness testing is ordered, unless the purchaser specifies otherwise.

HIC Tested A516 Gr 70 Plate
HIC tested A516 Grade 70 plate is supplied with a test report giving crack length ratio (CLR), crack thickness ratio (CTR) and crack sensitivity ratio (CSR). Results are recorded against the limits agreed on the order.
Plate comes both from stock and on order. Sour service qualification to ANSI/NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 falls outside our supply programme, and a TM0284 test report does not stand in for it.

ASTM A516 Grade 70 vs A515 Grade 70 vs A36 Plate
A516 Grade 70 is a fine grain steel for notch toughness at moderate and lower temperatures. A515 Grade 70 is a killed, coarse grain carbon-silicon steel for intermediate and higher temperature service. A36 is structural plate with no pressure vessel quality basis.

A516 and A515 have the same tensile and yield numbers, so the two are often swapped on an order. What separates them is grain practice. Fine grain lets A516 Gr 70 stay tough at lower temperatures, and the choice between SA 515 Gr 70 and SA 516 Gr 70 comes down to that. A36 is a different class of plate. It has no fine grain requirement and no A20/A20M quality basis, so A516 Grade 70 and A36 plate part company on quality long before they part on strength.
ASTM A516 Grade 70 Plate Industrial Applications
Fabricators use carbon steel A516 Grade 70 plate for welded pressure vessels, boiler drums, storage tanks and heat exchanger shells. The grade suits designs that need notch toughness at moderate and lower temperatures alongside straightforward weldability.
Pressure Vessels
Vessel builders draw against ASME Section VIII. They take A516 Grade 70 pressure vessel quality plate from stock for shells, heads and nozzle reinforcing pads. One vessel commonly mixes 6 mm internals with heavy shell rings, and one grade whose carbon limit changes with thickness keeps the material master short.
Storage Tanks
Tank builders work to API 650 and API 620, and they take the thinner end of the range. Storage tank shell courses in A516 Grade 70 step down in thickness as static head falls with tank height. One job often pulls 6 mm, 8 mm and 12 mm plate together.
Oil and Gas
Separators, knock-out drums and produced water vessels often operate where hydrogen charging is a real risk, and HIC tested plate answers it directly. What is SA 516 Gr 70 material?
SA 516 Gr 70 is pressure vessel quality carbon-manganese plate. It is killed and fine grained to ASTM A20/A20M. Tensile strength is 485 to 620 MPa and minimum yield strength is 260 MPa. ASME reproduces ASTM A516 in Section II Part A as SA-516, so the two designations describe one steel.
Which Indian standard applies to ASTM A516 Grade 70 plate?
No Indian standard carries a direct equivalent. IS 2041 runs closest. It covers moderate and low temperature pressure vessel plate, the steel is made to fine austenitic grain practice, it carries Charpy impact provisions, and its tensile bands overlap A516 Grade 70. IS 2002 covers intermediate and high temperature service including boilers, which is A515 territory rather than A516.

Is ASME SA 516 Grade 70 plate the same as ASTM A516 Grade 70 plate?
Yes. ASME BPVC Section II Part A reproduces ASTM A516 as SA-516, and the chemistry and mechanical requirements are the same. The plates we supply carry both designations where the heat is dual certified. The Code adopts a nominated ASTM edition, so check the edition year on the certificate against the drawing.
Should I order A516 Grade 70 plate as-rolled or normalized?
As-rolled is the normal supply condition at 40 mm and under, and normalizing is mandatory above 40 mm. What decides it for your vessel is the design temperature on the drawing and whether the order calls for impact testing, not the thickness on its own. At 40 mm and under, an order that specifies Charpy testing also requires normalizing, unless the purchaser specifies otherwise.
What is the difference between A516 Grade 70 and A515 Grade 70 plate?
Tensile and yield values match, at 485 to 620 MPa and 260 MPa minimum. A516 Gr 70 uses fine grain practice for toughness at lower temperatures. A515 Gr 70 uses coarse grain practice for intermediate and higher temperature service.
Does every consignment come with a mill test certificate?
