ASTM A516 Grade 70 is a carbon steel pressure vessel plate supplied against ASTM A516/A516M and ASME SA-516 for moderate and lower temperature service. Ready stock runs 3 mm to 20 mm thick, 1250 mm and 1500 mm wide, at lengths of 5000 mm and 6300 mm. Thicknesses to 100 mm come against order, and we cut to size from stock plates.
Notch toughness is why designers specify this grade over other carbon steels of the same strength. The steel is killed and made to the fine austenitic grain requirement of ASTM A20/A20M, which lowers the ductile to brittle transition temperature. Fabricators also know it as boiler quality plate, or BQ plate, and as pressure vessel quality plate, or PVQ plate. The Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation was constituted in 1962, and the estate system it built at Ankleshwar, Vapi, Dahej and Jhagadia now carries the refining, petrochemical and fertiliser plant behind most vessel and tank fabrication in the state.

ASTM A516 Grade 70 Plate Supply Condition
Supply conditions follow plate thickness and the order. ASTM A516 treats plate at 40 mm and under as normally supplied as-rolled, which covers our entire 3 mm to 20 mm ready stock. Plates over 40 mm must be normalised, and we arrange those against order. One rule catches industrialists out: where notch toughness testing is ordered at 40 mm and under, the standard requires normalising unless the purchaser specifies otherwise. The A516 Gr.70N can be supplied on request.

ASTM A516 Grade 70 Plate Industrial Applications
A516 Gr.70 plate goes into welded pressure vessels, boilers, storage tanks, heat exchangers, dished ends and condensers. Oil and Gas and Petrochemical
