What Is A516 Grade 70 PVQ Plate?
ASTM A516 Grade 70 plate is a pressure vessel quality carbon steel plate intended for welded pressure vessels where improved notch toughness is important, in moderate and lower temperature service. PVQ is the short form of pressure vessel quality. It means the plate is made and tested to the stricter rules that apply to pressure vessel plate, not to the rules for general structural steel.
Where the plate is dual certified, the mill certificate carries both the ASTM A516 Grade 70 and the ASME SA-516 Grade 70 designations. The same plate can then be used against an ASTM purchase specification and on an ASME Section VIII job.

What Makes A516 Grade 70 a Pressure Vessel Quality Plate
Four requirements sit behind the pressure vessel quality label on this grade.
Killed steel. The steel is fully deoxidised before casting, so it does not gas off as it solidifies. That gives less segregation and a more uniform plate.
Fine grain practice. This is the basis for good notch toughness, which is what a vessel needs at lower temperatures.
Controlled chemistry. Phosphorus and sulfur are capped at 0.025 percent each, and the limits apply to both heat analysis and product analysis.
Full traceability. Each plate is marked and certified to its heat, so the certificate ties back to the plate on your shop floor.
